Critical Inquiry is the process of gathering and evaluating information, ideas, and assumptions from multiple perspectives to produce well-reasoned analysis and understanding that lead to new ideas, applications, and questions.


Benchmark
Student Learning Outcome
1. Knowledge

This benchmark measures students’ knowledge of Critical Inquiry, and the themes and ideas presented in the first-year reading.


Students will:

  • Be able to define Critical Inquiry.
  • Know the general steps involved in Critical Inquiry.
  • Discern the main ideas and themes presented in the first-year reading.
  • Identify a problem or issue which draws from themes and ideas in the first-year reading.
  • Recognize and identify personal assumptions and perspectives related to the selected issue or problem.
2. Skills

This benchmark measures students’ skills in Critical Inquiry through active engagement in this process.


Students will:

  • Gather and evaluate information from reliable sources relevant to the selected problem or issue. (Information Literacy)
  • Develop and refine relevant questions based on gathered information.
  • Work collaboratively to develop and implement a plan to address the problem or issue.
  • Clearly communicate results or conclusions.
  • Pose new questions based on results or conclusions.
  • Evaluate the success of the effort.
3. Values

This benchmark measures changes in students’ values and behaviors related to involvement in Critical Inquiry.


Students will:

  • Demonstrate confidence in expressing thoughts and perspectives.
  • Exhibit intellectual curiosity.
  • Apply the Critical Inquiry process/skills in other academic courses.
  • Apply the Critical Inquiry process/skills in co-curricular activities or personal decisions.
  • Demonstrate an awareness of and respect for diverse or opposing perspectives.
